California songwriter Rob Hegel had a regional hit in several markets in 1980 with this quirky tune about a bizarre teenage love triangle. Nationally, it got to #109 on the Billboard Bubbling Under chart in Aug. 1980. It was kept from going any higher largely because of its risqué subject matter — it’s a frank look at teenage sex, sexual frustration and potential violence (at the beginning of the second verse Hegel eerily predicts the shooting that happened at Columbine High School nearly twenty years later). All the controversy caused some radio stations in major markets to refuse to add the song to their playlists. Hegel was asked to appear on “American Bandstand” to perform the song, but when Dick Clark and company caught wind of the lyrics (especially the first line), they had him sing another song instead. Hegel also wrote hits for Air Supply and Sarah Dash and has included a demo version of this song on his 2009 CD, Hegel 2, available from Amazon, CD Baby, itunes and through his Web site at www.robhegel.com.
